I built it,
that Hoover Dam of my imagination,
in my heart,
with my mind.
Such a powerful structure,
so strong,
so solid,
so massive,
so heavy.
Its design was purposeful,
logical,
a solution to a problem.
So much creative energy
restrained,
confined,
contained.
So much held back, because…
… because,
it seemed essential at the time.
And yet the structure never quite could succeed
in holding back the force that was intended to surge
with purpose and with joy,
from me,
towards others,
into the world.
There was always at least a trickle overflowing the top of the structure, dribbling tentatively across the boundary,
sparkling in the light as it fell so very far.
The joyfulness of that descent,
of that entry into new territory:
feeling the space around
with the exhilarating momentum,
approaching the surface below
as it churned and frothed with its own excitement,
its own welcome to another world.
The trickle flowed because the structure was
not powerful enough.
It was strong and stable and designed to protect.
It did its job.
It is not necessary anymore.
It does not need to be destroyed.
It simply has permission now to rest and stand strong,
with barriers released.
The trickle was enough before, when that is all that it could be.
The trickle served its purpose, too, connecting me to Source and purpose, gifts and talent, creativity and joy.
All that is above has been waiting for the right time,
when finally safe to surge over the barrier,
coloring the horizon with new reflective fragments
exploding,
flying,
falling,
through the air
and through the light.
The trickle was a lifeline.
The structure recognized it,
because it had no choice.
It was not powerful enough to stop it, then.
It does not need to exert its power now.
It can still stand,
strong and proud,
knowing it served its purpose then,
knowing it has served its purpose now,
relaxing and releasing…
so what is meant to flow now,
can.
